United Cellars is an independent fine wine and spirits merchant located in Australia and New Zealand. The company specialises in retailing premium wines and spirits from Australia, New Zealand and all over the world.
An opportunity has opened in our buying team for a Category Assistant Manager for our Cellar release and auctions channel. The role will assist in administrative functions and assist the Category Manager to source private wine cellar releases and potential auction opportunities.
Core Focus Areas of the role:
- Category Management and Growth - Assisting the Category Manager and internal stakeholders, suppliers and logistics, with the management of the Cellar Release wine portfolio, delivering the financial KPI's and driving sustainable category growth.
- Buying Assistance - Work closely across our sales, logistics and finance teams for Ranging, pricing, purchasing, administration and the logistical planning of all Cellar release and Auctions wine products.
- Category Activation- Working with our marketing, website and creative teams to help develop and execute a program to inspire our customers to shop our range. Working with Internal stakeholders including Marketing, Sales agents, eCom and Suppliers you will activate product and range stories focussed on the stories of the wine and spirits.
THE ROLE:
- To source and develop new sales opportunities from private cellar opportunities.
- To negotiate the sale and/or potential wine cellar management of private client collections using current market trends and metrics.
- Inspect the quality, standards and value of the wines of prospective collections.
- Product entry with a high level of accuracy, including chasing website images and information.
- Write concise, clear wine notes for products going onto the website. All products should be built as web and EDM ready unless clearly indicated otherwise - AI tools can be used to create efficiency.
- Creating and reviewing pricing for offers to clients in partnership with Category Manager.
- Maintain/Dedupe databases against already existing data with a high level of accuracy.
- Liaise with sales team to offer the products to client - pre-auctionTo provide the wider team with details of each new release by way of a formal team launch which will include presentation of the wine/s (origin & history) tastings, tasting notes, winemaker visits. To maintain an up to date knowledge of competitor activity so as to assist the Sales Manager and his/her sales team in offering comparable wines where appropriate.
- Liaise with the United Cellars Distribution Manager and Consignment Stock Manager in the coordination, receiving, quality assessment, order assembly and dispatch of goods.
- To maintain strong relationships with all private client vendors regularly providing updates as required
- To base your purchasing decisions around the Critical Success Factors whilst also keeping front of mind, Risk, Cash-flow and Net Profit.
- To complete and maintain accurate records in company files of all vendors and their contact details
- Create and meticulously maintain comprehensive weekly reports, ensuring accurate and timely documentation of key metrics and data.
- Create attractive product offerings for existing clients and new acquisitions.
- Find reviews for wines and offerings.
- To manage and take care of all event collateral to ensure its longevity.
- To work with the Creative team in relation with social media advertising. EDM creation and auction launches
- To be a face of United Cellars - displaying an extremely high level of professionalism in all discussions with private vendors.
- Providing a quarterly business plan, covering the past quarter [eg. what worked, what didn’t work, achievements, hurdles, opportunities for future attention] along with a plan for the following quarter [eg. what relationship management calls/visits need to be made, what new opportunities need to be explored, marketing plan for the quarter etc.]
WHO YOU ARE?
- Preferred minimum 2-3 year wine experience either hospitality or Retail
- Proven experience in a buying and logistics admin role

- Good knowledge of importing and logistics
- Strong experience in managing supplier relationships
- Solid knowledge of wines and spirits, formal wine education highly regarded. i.e. WSET cert or studying towards.
- A comprehensive understanding of both the local and global wine market and trends.
- Good presentation skills and willingness to expand.
- Advanced Excel skills, with a demonstrated ability to create and analyse reports.

- Business orientated and commercially astute
- Ability to work in a fast-paced sales focused environment
- An innovative, pro-active, self-starter who effectively manage their time and meeting deadlines with shifting priorities.
- Strong organisation and communication skills
- Customer service skills – procurement administrators work with suppliers to resolve shipping issues and negotiate material costs, so strong customer service skills are essential to the role.
- Have your own car
- This full time role is set as a hybrid work location situation - based at our Woolloomoloo office (3-4 days) and Smeaton Grange warehouse (1-2 days), so being comfortable working in a warehouse environment is required.
